Why Conservation Matters in Liberia

A landscape of global significance that needs protection

Liberia holds one of the largest remaining blocks of rainforest in West Africa, home to endemic species and ecosystems critical for climate stability, water security, and rural livelihoods. These landscapes are globally significant, yet they face persistent, structural challenges that undermine effective protection.

Key challenges include:

Chronic underfinancing

Reliance on short-term projects that cannot consistently sustain patrols, monitoring, or community engagement.

01

Escalating threats

Poaching, wildfires, unregulated extraction, agricultural expansion, and climate-related shocks.

02

Limited livelihood alternatives

Few sustainable economic options for communities living around protected areas.

03

Unstable funding flows

Fragmented conservation financing driven by competing demands on government resources and shifting donor priorities.

04

Undeveloped revenue streams

Limited access to carbon markets, biodiversity offsets, and private-sector contributions.

05

Together, these pressures weaken biodiversity protection, strain communities, and jeopardize national climate commitments.

LCF exists to address this systemic financing gap by providing a durable, well-governed, and Liberia-led platform for long-term investment in conservation and the people who depend on it.
